She's alive

Hello all! Sorry there haven’t been any updates lately. I had my wisdom teeth out last Thursday and spent all weekend in recovery. As for the rest of this week, I’ve been catching up on work and life in general.

Yipee for finally getting my wisdom teeth out! Now I can move on to other things like pondering Britney Spears latest nervous breakdown or the “Furry Reaper,” the cat in New England who appears to predict the deaths of nursing home patients. Creepy on both accounts.

As for me and my house, it looks like we’ll be converting the crib to a toddler bed this weekend. I caught Brady trying to jump out last night. He had one leg over the side and was kinda stuck. I really want to prevent any swan dives onto the hardwood floors in the middle of the night. It will be sad in a way, though. He’s growing up so fast. After this, the only thing standing between him and his driver’s license is potty training. Where did the time go?

The weekend is looking pretty busy so far. There’s grocery shopping and general errands to run. We also might head up to Asheville for Bele Chere, a really neat street festival up in the mountains. Sunday we have a ice cream social with our Sunday School class. Not that I necessarily need any more ice cream after my oral surgery, but I guess a little more won’t hurt anything.

I also have my eye on the cutest denim dress at Ann Taylor Loft. Not that I need it, but it would be the perfect pick-me-up.

Blessings to everyone!Serah

Don't step on my blue suede shoes

Brady loves your typical toddler television: Little Einstein’s, The Wiggles, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, etc. He also has more, let’s say vintage, taste in music. His current favorite – Johnny Cash Live in Denmark, 1971. I kid you not.

Lennon got this concert from Netflix and it has become Brady’s favorite. He requests it every evening as background music for his playing, coloring, whatever. Every little bit he’ll stop and dance around to a particular song, usually Carl Perkin’s singing “Blue Suede Shoes” or the gospel songs they all do at the end. He even “sings” to Blue Suede Shoes by kicking a leg out and yelling “SHOES.” He also loves “A Boy Named Sue” and “Folsom Prison Blues.” I don’t know how I’ll explain to his teacher when he says he shot a man in Reno just to watch him die. How do you address that in a parent/teacher conference?

Thankfully, we like the concert as well, so it isn’t complete torture for it to play up to three times in an evening. Maybe next week we’ll see what he thinks of Simon and Garfunkel or David Bowie.

Variety is truly the spice of life.

Feeding the Family

Good morning! I know, everyone was worried that I jumped off the bloggy bandwagon, right? Or maybe you were hoping that’s what happened!

Anyway, we’ve had a busy weekend and past few days. I’m also getting ready to have my wisdom teeth out on Thursday. I’ll be off work Thursday and Friday, so say a few prayers for my quick recovery. I would greatly appreciate it.

So today I’m thinking about cooking and my journey into cooking. I’ve been married for 6 years now and it’s only been in the past couple of years that I have really started to enjoy cooking. Lennon’s a great cook and we do split a lot of those duties. There are some dishes that he makes so much better than me (i.e. shrimp alfredo). But I’m really enjoying the whole process now; planning the menus, looking up recipes, shopping, and actually preparing the meal.

I’ve always been much more of a baker than a cook. Baking has always been my thing. I’m so happy to now be able to complete the whole picture. I try to give us a lot of variety. We usually have Italian Night, Mexican Night, Asian Night, etc. We still have lots of good Southern cooking as you would expect. I haven’t perfected my biscuits, but I’m working on that. We also have Easy Nights (hot dogs, grilled cheese). There are so many things I want to try and learn how to make. We might even have Thai Night soon!

At the end of the day, though, the main goal is to feed my family a healthy, lovingly-made meal. They may not like everything I make, but at least they know I made it with the best intentions. That’s what matters!

Happy Tuesday!

Where in the world

If you didn’t live where you do, where would you be? Is there somewhere you always saw yourself living?

My first choice would be New York City. Since I was itty-bitty, I always pictured myself living in the Big Apple. Even now, I can see myself living there with my family. We’d have a fabulous apartment. Modest, but bigger than a shoebox. I’d work in theater as a make-up artist or in wardrobe. We’d take Brady to the Central Park Zoo, MOMA, and to play dates with Sarah Jessica Parker’s son James Wilkie. I’d actually get to wear winter clothes and enjoy Christmas at Rockefeller Center. We’d also be close enough to Lennon’s family to actually see them more than every three years.

My second choice would be Austin, Texas. A little bit country, but a little bit rock and roll. Life seems a little slower in Austin, but with a funkier vibe. I would finally open that bakery I’ve dreamed of. We would live in a charming little bungalow with a front porch with a swing. We’d visit with friends and eat at all the trendy restaurants, including the one Giada de Laurentis went to that served the carrot cake French toast. Yummy!

Truth be told, I do love living where I am. We’re at the edge of the mountains, close enough to see them in the distance when you drive around town. The beach is about 3 hours away. It’s a safe area with good schools, relatively speaking. We have great hospitals, fantastic shopping and an evolving art scene. Our downtown couldn’t be better, with a great park and so many free events for families. We’re convenient to major cities like Atlanta and Charlotte. The city really takes pride in itself and that shows.

Who knows where we may end up in the future, but it’s wonderful to know all the possibilities.

Happy Hump Day!

Hello all! We're still stuck in a hot and sticky stretch. How much longer until Fall?

Well, we've had some changes at our house. My sweet husband has started a part-time job to help us achieve some short and long-term goals. He's such a trooper and works so hard to take care of us.

He's working a lot of the weekend now and usually one night a week, so I'm trying to come up with a good schedule for Brady and I. We still do all the usual stuff, but I'm trying to plan some special outings and fun to keep us busy. Otherwise we might veg out in front of the tv watching endless episodes of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse.

Now on Saturday mornings we head to the downtown Farmer's Market. They have fabulous produce and it's really become a hot gathering spot. We hit Soby's stand for some outrageously good blueberry pastries and then start our shopping. I load up on tomatoes, peaches, squash, zuccinni, blueberries........you name it, they have it. And at reasonable prices! There's always a local band playing and lots of puppies for Brady to watch. So that's become our Saturday morning tradition.

I'll keep you posted as we come up with other ones.

Have a fantastic day!

What's for dinner?

Inspired by BooMama and also the mere fact that I'm trying to become more organized, I thought I'd start posting my weekly menu here. Of course, things are subject to change. Sometimes I just don't want to eat what I had planned for Tuesday and so I swap it for Wednesday. No big deal!

Here we go:
Monday - Breakfast for dinner! We do the works: pancakes, eggs, sausage, and toast. So much fun and a nice little change.
Tuesday - Hot Dog Casserole. I know, it sounds awful. This is a recipe I've been making since I was a kid and it's still good and easy. It just won't win any gourmet food contests.
Wednesday - 4th of July! Burgers, seasoned fries and baked beans
Thursday - Lennon's night out, so Brady and I will be having grilled cheese sandwiches and chips.
Friday - Unknown right now
Saturday - Pork fried rice, salad and egg rolls
Sunday - Mexican Chicken

Ya'll have a great Monday!
