At least he knows there's a difference

Lennon was off to his "guy's night out" last night, so Brady and I were on our own for the evening. We got home and I got him situated in the living room with some juice and a Veggie Tales movie, then went back out to the car to unload. I walk back in the living room and Brady looks up at me and says very matter-of-factly "You not Daddy!"

And I thought he didn't pay attention.

It's like eating at Cracker Barrel everyday

As some of you know, Brady started a new daycare last week. I won’t go into all the details, but it’s been a really great change for our family. His new place is only 5 minutes from our home, will save us quite a bit of money, and most of all, he loves it! It was recommended to us by many people at our church and in my MOPS group and it’s been great. He didn’t cry the first day he went or any day since. It’s amazing.

A great bonus is that they serve both breakfast and lunch everyday. His old daycare only served lunch on Mondays and Fridays and no breakfasts. The only thing is I didn’t realize he would be eating better than me! Seriously, it’s like he goes to Cracker Barrel every day. Here’s a sampling of the lunch menus from the past few days:

Chicken and Rice
English Peas
Other vegetable
Bread and butter
Milk
Chocolate pudding with whipped cream

Fish Nuggets
Cole slaw
Other vegetable
Cornbread
Milk
Peach Cobbler

Chicken Pot Pie
Spinach Casserole
Other vegetable
Bread and butter
Milk
Fresh Fruit

And breakfast consists of eggs, grits, toast, juice and cheese. I’m a little afraid he’ll have a cholesterol problem by the time he’s 3. But he’s happy as a clam and we’re happy, so everyone’s happy.

It looks like another stormy day around here. We had some bad weather last night, but thankfully we never lost power.

Stay dry and have a fabulous day!

No water towers were harmed during this birthday party

We played with balloons, we ate barbeque and way too much cake, opened presents and had all sorts of birthday fun Saturday. It was a great day.

Lennon and I split the birthday errands Saturday morning. He and Brady headed off to pick up the cake and I went to Party City to get the 21 John Deere birthday balloons. Apparently Saturday was a popular day for balloons seeing as I had to fight my way through Spider Man balloons, Sponge Bob Square Pants balloons, and Disney Princess balloons just to make it to the balloon desk. Mine were ready to go, so I floated out to the parking lot where it began to dawn on me that all those balloons might not fit in the car. What would I do? Let them blow out the window while I was doing 75 on the interstate (not that I ever exceed the posted speed limit)? Or beg a Minivan Mom to follow me home with my balloons? Thankfully, they all went right in and other than being unable to see out the back windshield, all went well.

I’ve mentioned before how much Brady loves balloon. Saturday I was sure that I could have simply gotten him 20 or 30 balloons for $15 instead of spending money on presents. He was having that much fun. Of course, if we had let him outside with all those balloons, he would probably be somewhere around Nova Scotia by now.

The cake was beyond perfect! Absolutely perfect. I was expecting a plastic tractor stuck on top, but they actually designed the tractor on the cake with icing. And it tasted great, too! The barbeque was equally as awesome. You have to love Sticky Fingers and their Memphis-style pulled pork.

The family arrived at 2pm and we ate shortly after that. Later in the afternoon we began opening presents. Most kids jump right in and start tearing paper as if their life depends on it. Not Brady. He likes to tear off piece by tiny piece, making his own confetti for next year’s party. He was in absolutely no rush at all. That wouldn’t have been so bad except when he got to the art box I had put together. In a moment of wrapping genus, I wrapped every art supply individually (box of crayons, box of markers, sidewalk chalk, etc.), put it in the container and then wrapped the container. I get this wrapping gene from my mom’s mother, who is a wrapping genius. The woman should seriously own stock in Scotch tape and Hallmark. My whole family groaned once they realized what I had done. But Brady enjoyed it. That’s what matters. J Unfortunately this let me know that Christmas morning is going to be very long and I might want to invest in lots of gift bags. Otherwise, it could take until New Year’s to get everything opened up.

Brady got a bubble mower from my parents, along with his zoo membership. He and Lennon went right out and started mowing away. This bubble mower really needs some speed behind it to get those bubbles going. It’s more like a bubble racer. But he loves it nonetheless.

It was a great party and everyone had a lot of fun. I’m glad it was relaxed and easy because next year I’m pulling out the stops and doing something big with his classmates and little friends.

I should have the pictures up soon and will post them so everyone can enjoy a little piece of our day.

Happy Monday!

John Deere Green

Remember this song by Joe Diffie?

“In John Deere green
On a hot summer night
He wrote Billy Bob loves Charlene
In letters 3 foot high
And the whole town said the boy should have used red
But it looked good to Charlene
In John Deere green”

I don’t know if we’ll be painting letters on a water tower this weekend, but we will be using John Deere green to celebrate Brady’s 2nd birthday. The big day was actually on the 9th, but we had to postpone the party due to some scheduling conflicts. So the family is coming up and we’ll be partying hard, at least until 5pm or 6pm. J

We’ve got a great cake ordered from Gretchen ABS Cakes in Mauldin. They did Brady’s first birthday cake last year and it was fabulous, so I have high expectations for the tractor cake tomorrow. I know, given my fondness for baking, I really should have done it myself. But I want it to be picture perfect for him. We’re picking that up at 10am and then off to Party City to pick up the 21 John Deere balloons. You can never have too many balloons.

I wanted to be easy on myself this year, so we’re having the food catered by Sticky Fingers. I would have preferred to use a local bbq place, as I’m all about supporting your small businesses, but SF has great Memphis-style bbq and a better package deal for a small group. We’re having pulled pork bbq, all the sauces, beans, coleslaw, chips, sweet tea, lemonade, ice cream and cake.

Our fabulous party décor came from greenfunshop.com.

So it should be a really nice afternoon to celebrate another exciting year in Brady’s life. Stay tuned for pictures and a review!Have a great weekend!

Just because he's cute

Paper, Paper Everywhere

I'll just say it: I hate filing bills. Hate it. Maybe because I do administrative work all day, when I get home the last thing I want to do is look at more paper. So that would probably explain the pile of statements, receipts, old bills, etc., that was in my bedroom closet. I couldn't tell you the last time I actually filed something except to put it on the "to be filed" stack.

Last night I pulled out the stack, my manilla folders and my file box and got to work. To make the task less painfully, I put on my Sarah McLachlan concert dvd to provide some background music. An hour and a half later, everything that needed to be filed was filed and everything that needed to be shredded was in a "To be shredded" bag. Now I just need to find an industrial-style shredded. I promise, I'll do better about this going forward.

Now for fun stuff. Happy First Day of Summer! Living in the South, I swear that Spring was in March and Summer began in April. Anyway, I think I'll take Brady to the park tonight and get some ice cream to celebrate the offical start of the season. Hopefully he'll go to bed easily even if the sun is still shining at 9pm.

This morning he woke up smiling, as usual. He trotted into the living room to watch Little Einstein's (Thank God for Tivo, otherwise we wouldn't have 32 episodes of LE on stand-by) and drink his milk. Then he wanted a Poptart, RIGHT NOW! I was getting everything together and bringing it into the living room when I heard "Where's my Poptart!??" Geez, some people are impatient when they get up! :-)

Happy Summer!

I want to be Sydney Bristow

Back when Alias was current and a hit tv show, we never watched. No particular reason why, we just never turned it on. Now, thanks to Netflix, we've been working our way through all the seasons. Ya'll, this is just the best show ever! Well, not as good as Grey's Anatomy, but almost. Jennifer Garner rocks at Sydney Bristow and makes me want to be a spy. How fun would it be to wear those cool disguises and run around with a gun? Nothing that exciting ever happens at my work.

I wonder if anyone here would notice if I started wearing all black and running down the hallways with an automatic weapon? Probably not.

On to other things, we have been introduced to Ralph's World. If you ever watch Playhouse Disney, you've probably seen him doing a song inbetween shows. Brady started watching him after Little Einstein's. He's cute in that indie rocker kind-of-way and the songs aren't terribly annoying. We got Brady the cd/dvd for his birthday and he loves it. The only problem is the dvd is only about 12 minutes long. So if you're interested, go check him out:

Hot and muggy

That pretty much sums up summer in the south, doesn't it? We're baking down here in SC, but at least we got some much-needed rain last week. Our yard isn't crunchy anymore!

We had a great Father's Day weekend. Saturday we drove up to the North Carolina Zoological Park in Asheboro, NC, for the day. It's a fabulous zoo and took us about 4 hours to see the whole thing, minus the birds and the chimps. We were just really tired at that point. It's a 2 and a half hour drive from our house, but totally worth it. And thanks to our membership to the Greenville Zoo (Thanks Mom and Dad!), admission was free. :-) Brady had a great time racing from one animal to another. Sunday we went to church, worked a little in the yard, and ran some errands in the afternoon. Lennon had a grand Father's Day dinner of salmon, roasted potatoes, broccoli and strawberry shortcake. Overall, a great weekend.

Oh, and the gifts! Brady and I made him a scrapbook of pictures of he and Brady together. Well, I mostly made it. You know how that goes. He's also getting a newspaper article framed and the NFL Season Ticket from Directv so he can see his darling New England Patriots play this fall.

Have a great day!

My little man

So who do I make all these cupcakes for? This little guy usually!

The sweetest boy in the world, Brady will be 2 this Saturday. He's the happiest person you'll ever meet, except when you deprive him of potato chips or turn off Little Einsteins. Today he got up around 6:30am and immediately started jumping on his bed, giggling. Did I have that much energy once?

His talking has really taken off lately. We're hearing little phrases like "Where Daddy go?" and "See you later." My personal favorite is "really big truck!" It sounds slightly German. :-) His favorite things are planes and birds and balloons. Anything that flies, I guess. So he'll be having more balloons than he'll know what to do with for his birthday.

Off to work! Ya'll have a great day!

Return of the blog!

I first tried the whole blog thing last fall, but failed miserably. I think I was trying too hard. :-) So I'm giving it another spin.

So why did I name my blog "Honeysuckle and Cupcakes?" Honeysuckle just says the South to me. When you think of southern summers, the smell of honeysuckle immeadately comes to mind. And I'm about all things Southern. Cupcakes because baking is my thing. When I'm stressed, happy, depressed, or excited, I bake. When a friend is having a rough time, I bake them something. When my little boy celebrates a milestone, I bake something. It's who I am.

So I hope you'll join me, whoever you may be, as I chronicle our daily life.

Talk to you soon!
